Description of adults: Examined: Original description and drawings by Rebel 1898. Forewing length: 32 mm. Ground colour of wings light, probably yellowish-white; forewing with a probably hyaline marginal fascia and four dark transverse spots along costa with about equal distance from each other and with a lenght about equal to the width of the discoidal cell: The proximalmost spot in the basal third, the second in the middle and the third spot at the end of the discoidal cell; the distalmost spot between discus and outer margin; basis of wing and proximal part of costa darkened too; hindwing with a broad dark area at basis, probably extenting along inner margin to tornus; a narrow dark medial fascia from costa outwardly oblique along the discal crossvein; outer margin like in the forewing (probably hyaline); abdomen with sphragis.

Distribution:

The species is known from the single type only, which has been found near Scaforno in Tuscany.

Anatomy:

Venation, reconstructed

Detailed view

The wing venation of D. bosniaskii is mainly characterized by 4 branches of the R-stem, a character, which is otherwise found in the Parnassiinae only in the genus Archon Hübner, [1822].

Rebel (1898) has discussed the phylogeny of the fossil in detail, mainly based on characteristics of wing venation and the structure of the sphragis. In his opinion, the newly described genus Doritites is a direct precursor of the recent Parnassius Latreille, 1804. Later authors have attributed the species to Luehdorfia Crüger, 1878. In the opinion of Nazari (2006), Doritites is a sister taxon of Archon Hübner, [1822]. For a phylogenetic discussion see also Hancock (1983).

Worth knowing:

The fossil is of miocenic age (23.03 - 5.33 Ma).
