Scheme of wing pattern:

Description of adults: Examined: 35 , 21 [incl. types of both subspecies]). Forewing length: 3.1 - 3.6 mm; 3.6 - 4.3 mm. Head black-brown; vestiture of hair-like scales on the head dirty white to dark yellow; antennae dark brown, golden shining, 3/4 (), respectively, slightly more than 1/2 () of forewing length; thorax golden to bronzy golden, often purple distad; tegulae light bronzy golden, posteriorly often purple or even with single bluish scales, sometimes completely purple; forewing base mostly reddish-golden to brown-golden (especially in males), golden at costa; forewings otherwise dark purple to purple violet with light golden markings, sometimes delicately boardered bronzy golden: A very broad, somewhat irregular fascia at 1/4 across the whole wing width, somewhat constricted towards costa, sometimes with a narrow extension towards the wing base and bronzy golden towards the inner margin; a similar broad, sometimes slightly s-shaped fascia at 1/2 across the whole wing width, sometimes broadened at costa; at 3/4 a broad, slightly inwardly oblique fascia from costa across 2/3 of the wing width, often nearly quadrangulate; the width of the fasciae varies considerable, the females mostly having distinctly narrower ones; furthermore, the fasciae may be confluent along the costa, as well as in the center of the wing and at the inner margin; fascia at 3/4 distally with a narrow extension towards the outer margin in typical subspecies; the outer margin and the apex sometimes spotted bronzy golden, in subspecies rhodiensis a moderately broad golden stripe from apex along the outer margin, sometimes confluent with the spot at 3/4, leaving the outermost tip of the wing purple; fringe light golden, whitish golden outwards, along the outer margin often with a coppery base; hind wings bronzy golden, more or less intensively tinged purple, especially towards apex; fringe bronzy golden, whitish golden outwards, basally sometimes purple; legs brown, golden shining; abdomen dark brown, golden shining.

Distribution:

The species is known from western Anatolia (Heath, 1973), as well as from the Aegean islands Rhodos and Samos (Kurz, Kurz & Zeller 1993, Kurz & Kurz 2010). Vertically, the specimens have been caught near sea level (ssp. rhodiensis) and between 1600 - 1700 m (typical form, see Kurz & Kurz 2010).

Biology:

Some of the investigated specimens of ssp. rhodiensis have been caught by Klimesch on Pistacia lentiscus, according to their labels. Imagines of the species were on the wing between April and June, depending on the altitude (Kurz & Kurz 2010).

Stages in development:

The early stages are unknown.

Genitalia. Uncus moderately long, more or less slender, with a broadly rounded tip; accessory claspers paddle-like, at the inner surface distally with a row of 6 - 9 moderately long, inwardly bent, stout and thickened setae with spoon-like enlarged tips; at the margins, that are nearest to the uncus, medially with two fin-like, stout and thickened setae and another thickened, but distally only slightly enlarged seta slightly beyond these; valves basally strongly inflated, distad of the middle slender and bent downwards, with spatulate tips; at the inner surface at the lower margin postbasally with 3 long, bent, stout and thickened setae, as well as a row of short setae; at the inner surface of the spatulate tips 6 short, inwardly bent, stout and thickened setae as well as some unmodified setae.

Genitalia. Tergite IX missing; sternite IX much reduced, only slightly sclerotized, with indistinct lateral margins; papillae anales band-like sclerotized, not diagnostic; receptaculum seminis very slender and extraordinarily long, the normally conspicuous striation almost completely missing; otherwise, the proximal end of the receptaculum is conspicuously segmented. The above description of the female genitalia is based on ssp. rhodiensis only, since females of the typical ssp. are unknown.

So far, there are no other similar species known within the distribution range of M. klimeschi. The greek Micropterix wockei Staudinger, 1870 has distinctly smaller fasciae than M. klimeschi and lacks the bronzy golden colouration along the outer margin.

Phylogeny: Male and female genitalia of M. klimeschi are very characteristic. They suggest some relationship to Micropterix completella Staudinger, 1870, to some, partly undescribed, species in northern Africa, as well as to Micropterix cassinella Kurz, Kurz & Zeller, 2010 from Italy mainland. It has been the latter species, to which Heath (1973) has referred to in his original description, when comparing the male genitalia of M. klimeschi and M. wockei.
