Familia: Heliozelidae Heinemann & Wocke, 1877

(zoological nomenclature: valid name, available)

General information:

Type: Heliozela Herrich-Schäffer, 1853: 315.

Distribution:

Following Karsholt & Nieukerken (2013), Heliozelidae are distributed nearly throughout the whole of Europe. Only from the Balearic islands, Sardinia, Crete, Cyprus, some western Balkan countries and Moldova no records have been published. For the first time, a Heliozela (Heliozela lithargyrellum (Zeller, 1850)) is recorded from Sardinia and the Balearic islands. Furthermore, Heliozelidae are distributed worldwide (anonymous 2009a, Hodges et al. 1983, Nielsen et al. 1996, De Prins & De Prins 2015).

Diagnosis:

Although the family shows some probably plesiomorphic characters of the Incurvarioidea, like the combs of pegs on the valvae or the fused ends of the juxta in the -genitalia or even the mode of life of the larvae which make a flat leaf case prior to pupation, Heliozelidae are distinguished from the other groups by the reduction of the venation, especially of the hindwings.
