Scheme of wing pattern:

Description of adults: Examined: 1 , 2 . Forewing length: 3.5 mm, 3.8 – 4.0 mm. Head black-brown, vestiture of hair-like scales on the head yellow to rusty yellow; antennae dark brown, slightly bronzy golden shining, 4/5 (), respectively, about 3/5 () of forewing length; thorax bronzy golden, distally with purple-violet scales; tegulae purple to purple-violet, distally with some blue scales; forewings golden to bronzy golden, the inner margin somewhat darker golden, with purple to purple-violet, sometimes delicately bronzy golden bordered markings: A spot at the base of the costa, reaching across the half wing width; a very broad, fascia-like spot at the costa, reaching across 3/4 of the wing width, broadened towards the inner margin; a moderately broad fascia distad of 1/2 across the whole wing width, slightly oblique towards the inner margin; a costal spot at 2/3, mostly confluent with the medial fascia and thus delimitating a small golden costal spot; the medial fascia often distally enlarged, delimitating a small golden spot at the inner margin; a moderately broad spot at the costa, reaching across 3/4, sometime across the whole wing width, sometimes confluent with the extension of the medial fascia and thus delimitating several small golden spots at the outer margin; outermost tip of the wing also purple to purple violet; fringe bronzy golden to purple at its base, light golden outwards; hindwings bronzy golden, more or less tinged purple to purple-violet, especially at the apex; fringe bronzy golden, lighter outwards; legs and abdomen brown, golden shining.

Distribution:

M. zagoriensis is known only from the type locality in Epirus, Greece, in a height of 600 - 620 m a.s.l. (Kurz et al. 2010).

Biology:

There aren´t any data available about the biology of the species. The imagines have been caught in early May (Kurz et al. 2010).

Stages in development:

The early stages are unknown.

Genitalia. Uncus moderately long and relatively broad; accessory claspers triangle-shaped, the outermost tip with richely developed and numerous stout and thickened setae, which are sickle-, T- or Y-shaped; a row of similar setae extending proximally from the tip at the inner surface; a row of moderately long, more or less straight, stout and thickened setae along the margin opposite to the valves; valves long and slender, somewhat constricted in the middle; postbasally two stout and thickened setae at the inner surface; the elongated distal end spatulate with 2 - 3 irregular rows of mostly short, straight, stout and thickened setae.

Genitalia. Tergite IX missing; sternite IX reduced, not distinctive; papillae anales band-like sclerotized, margin towards segment IX medially enlarged outwardly; receptaculum seminis moderately long, somewhat constricted near the end to the ductus seminialis, bag-like enlarged towards the opposite end, striated.

Externally, M. zagoriensis is not distinguishable from Micropterix tunbergella (Fabricius, 1787) with certainty. The species is slightly darker, especially females having a more bronzy golden ground colour and more purple-violet markings.
The male genitalia are distinctly different from M. tunbergella, having a distinctly longer uncus and different accessory claspers. They somewhat resemble those of Micropterix maschukella Alpheraki, 1870, but the valves are more slender and the thickened setae on the inner surface of the accessory claspers are more richly developed. In the female genitalia, there seem to be no differences to M. tunbergella.

Phylogeny: Wether the overall similarity in male genitalia to M. maschukella is due to a real relationship, is still in question.

Worth knowing:

The official description and naming of the species will be published in the planned volume about Micropterigidae in the "Microlepidoptera of Europe"-series.
