Scheme of wing pattern:

Description of adults: Examined: 28 , 7 . Forewing length: 2.6 - 3.1 mm, 2.8 - 3.6 mm. Head black-brown, vestiture of hair-like scales on the head dirty yellow; antennae dark brown, golden shining, 4/5 (), respectively, 2/5 () of forewing length; thorax bronzy golden; tegulae bronzy golden to purple, distad purple to purple violet; forewings purple to purple violet with light golden to golden, delicately bronzy golden bordered markings: At 1/4 a straight fascia across the whole wing width, broad at inner margin, constricted towards costa and not always reaching it; at 1/2 a moderately broad, medially bent outwards or slightly S-shaped fascia across the whole wing width, sometimes constricted or interrupted in middle, sometimes broadened towards outer margin; at 3/4 an elongate spot across 1/2 to 3/4 of the wing width, rarely almost reaching outer margin, narrow, yet sometimes broad at costa, distally bottle-like inflated and slightly inwardly oblique towards inner margin, sometimes confluent with inner margin; fringe bronzy golden, whitish outwards; hindwings bronzy golden, coppery distad; fringe bronzy golden, lighter outwards; legs and abdomen brown, golden shining.

Distribution:

So far, M. trinacriella has been found only near the northern shore of Sicily (in a height of 50 m a.s.l.), as well as in the surrounding of Mount Etna (Kurz & Kurz 2011).

Biology:

There aren┤t any data available about the biology of M. trinacriella. The imagines are on the wing in one generation from April till June, depending on the altitude (Kurz & Kurz 2011).

Stages in development:

The early stages are unknown.

Genitalia. Uncus relatively short and broad; inside tegumen a structure with hair-like setae; accessory claspers broad, trapezoid; at distal margin, on inner surface a row of about 15 straight, apically partly bent, moderately long, stout and thickened setae; slightly proximad a second row of about 11 strongly modified, broadly T-shaped, stout and thickened setae; valves moderately long, from about 2/5 of their length outwards strongly constricted and bent, distal end spatulate; valves on inner surface postbasally with a group of 3 - 4 short, stout and thickened setae and with several normal setae; distal third with 1 - 2 rows of short, straight, stout and thickened setae and with a row of long, fine setae.

Genitalia. Tergite IX missing; sternite IX reduced to a quite small, weakly chitinized platelet with indistinct borders; papillae anales band-like sclerotized, not characteristic; receptaculum seminis very long and slender, distinctly striated.

In Sicily, we do not know of any other species similar to M. trinacriella. Externally very similar, but located in the Italian mainland is Micropterix myrtetella Zeller, 1850 in its typical form, which is separable with certainty only by genitalia examination. Micropterix completella Staudinger, 1871 from Sardinia however, has very broad fasciae and the fascia at 3/4 is reaching across the whole wing width.
Both mentioned species do not show any resemblance in the male genitalia to M. trinacriella and are easily separable. In the female genitalia, M. completella can be recognized by the distinctly sclerotized sternite IX and the extremely long receptaculum seminis. Females of M. myrtetella on the other hand, are nearly indistinguishable in the genitalia too, although the sclerotization of sternite IX is even weaker than in M. trinacriella.

Phylogeny: With respect to the structure of the male genitalia, we do not know of any close relatives of M. trinacriella. An overall similarity to the central Asian Micropterix turkmeniella Kuznetsov, 1960, as supposed in the original description (Kurz et al. 1997), is now no more interpreted as real relationship, since structural details in that species like the setae of the accessory claspers, are distinctly different.
