General information:

Bombyx alpina Frey & Wullschlegel, 1874

Distribution:

The typical subspecies is distributed in the Alps. It is found even as low as 500 m up to 1900 m a.s.l. is is most abundant in the montane zone (Kurz & Kurz 2019).

Biology:

Imagines fly from September onwards till November. They prefer light woods of larch, which is also the foodplant of the larva. Documentated data about the natural biotope are not available however (Kurz & Kurz 2019).

Stages in development:

The larvae feed on the needles of larch (Larix decidua).
