Distribution:

The species is distributed in North America (Hodges et al., 1983) and throughout most of Europe. Here, records are missing only from northern European Russia and from parts of the Balkan Peninsula (Karsholt & Nieurkerken, 2004). Vertical records are available from 100 and 1400 m a.s.l. (n=2, Kurz et al. 2009).

Diagnosis:

In Europe, P. (K.) lupulinus may be confused with Triodia sylvina (Linné, 1761) only. Normally, the latter flies distinctly later (July to October). The white fasciae on the forewing upperside are less distinct in T. sylvina, forming almost a right angle, whereas in P. (K.) lupulinus, this angle is much greater than a right one. Cross lamellae on the antennae, present in T. sylvina, are missing in P. (K.) lupulinus (Kurz, 2009). In Pharmacis (Korscheltellus) gracilis (Grote, [1865]) the fasciae are very indistinct, the forewing upperside being suffused and spotted with black-brown.
