Head black-brown; vestiture of hair-like scales on the head dirty to rusty yellow; antennae dark brown, bronzy golden shining, 4/5 (), respectively, 3/5 () of forewing length; thorax bronzy golden to coppery; tegulae silvery, distally bronzy golden to coppery; forewings bronzy golden to reddish golden with silvery-white, mostly distinctly bordered markings: At 1/4 a straight, narrow fascia across the whole wing width; at 1/2 a narrow fascia across the whole wing width, often slightly bent outwards; at slightly more than 3/4 a moderately broad, costal spot, inwardly oblique towards almost the middle of the wing; fringe bronzy golden, basally with a reddish tinge; hind wings bronzy golden, apically often slightly tinged purple; fringe bronzy golden, basally often reddish, lighter outwards; legs and abdomen dark brown, bronzy golden shining.

Distribution:

To present knowledge, the distribution of the species is restricted to the southern Appenines (Heath 1981 b). The vertical distribution has been documented so far only from 900-1000 m a.s.l. (Kurz & Kurz 2011).

Biology:

There aren┤t any data available about the biology of M. italica. The imagines are on the wing in May and June (Kurz & Kurz 2011).

Stages in development:

The early stages are unknown.

M. italica cannot be distinguished externally with certainty from Micropterix renatae Kurz, Kurz & Zeller, 1997 (northern Appenines), Micropterix erctella Walsingham, 1919 (Sicily) or reddish golden specimens of Micropterix aruncella (Scopoli, 1763) from the central Apennines, although the former two seem to be allopatric.
In the male genitalia, all four species are easily separable, M. italica being characterized by a stout complex of uncus and tegumen and relatively stout valves, the latter bearing 8 stout setae at their inner surface postbasally.
In the female genitalia, there have not been found strinking features of diagnostic value, although the receptaculum seminis seems to be shorter in M. italica than in M. aruncella.

Phylogeny: As described above, the male genitalia of M. erctella, M. italica and M. renatae show some common features, which are interpreted in the sense of a closer relationship. The relation of this species-complex to other complexes in the genus however, remains unclear.
